Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare osmund stone n. at osmund n.1 Compounds, with which there is no obvious connection of sense, though a similar association with a personal or place name is conceivable.
Scottish. Now historical.
In full osmond stone. A refractory stone formerly used in parts of western and central Scotland for the floors of ovens, probably consisting of various altered olivine-rich basic igneous rocks.

1792 J. Sinclair Statist. Acct. Scotl. II. xi. 119 There are also found large masses of the osmund stone, which seems to be a volcanic production. It stands the strongest heat without renting.
1806 R. Forsyth Beauties Scotl. III. 10 In the parishes of Eaglesham, Kilbarchan, and others, there has been found what is called the osmund stone... It is generally so soft, when lately quarried, that it may be cut with a chisel... It is used for ovens, furnaces, &c.
1925 E. M. Anderson in J. E. Richey et al. Econ. Geol. Ayrshire Coalfields (Mem. Geol. Surv. Scotl.) 79 Osmond Stone.—The term was used for a stone..suitable for the rather large blocks at one time used for the soles of bakers' ovens. The best known sources in Scotland appear to have been some of the interior layers of teschenite sills.
1940 M. Macgregor et al. Synopsis Min. Resources Scotl. (Mem. Geol. Surv. Scotl.) 49 A basic igneous rock (picrite) near Blackburn, West Lothian, is quarried for use as a hearthstone, especially for lining the soles of bakers' ovens. A similar rock has been worked in Ayrshire..under the name of ‘osmond stone’.
