Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: osmo- comb. form2, -philic comb. form.
Etymology: < osmo- comb. form2 + -philic comb. form, after German osmophil (A. A. von Richter 1912, in Mycolog. Centralbl. 1 74).
Biology.
Of a microorganism, esp. a yeast: living or thriving in an environment of high osmotic pressure (e.g. due to high sugar or salt concentration). Cf. osmotolerant adj. at osmo- comb. form2 .
