Etymology: < oto- comb. form + -logy comb. form, after French otologie (1793). Compare slightly earlier otological adj.
Originally: † the anatomical study of the ear (obsolete). Later: the branch of medical science (spec. a branch of surgery) that deals with the ear and its diseases.
