Etymology: < Mexican Spanish Otomí (1560; 1519–26 in plural otomíes, 1553 as otomix denoting the people, otomitlh, otomilh denoting the language) < Nahuatl otomih, plural of otomitl.With the form Othomi compare Spanish othomí (1770 in an isolated attestation).
