Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: oto- comb. form, -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < oto- comb. form + -scope comb. form. Compare French otoscope (1855).
Medicine.
1. Originally: an instrument resembling a stethoscope, used to listen for the sound of air in the middle ear or Eustachian tube (now rare or disused). Later (in full acoustic otoscope): an instrument that measures sound reflected from the tympanic membrane, used chiefly to detect fluid in the middle ear.

1884 M. Mackenzie Man. Dis. Throat & Nose II. 243 Brunton's otoscope..consists of a metallic tube provided with an eye-piece. Into this tube a funnel opens at right angles, through which the light is made to fall on a perforated reflector, which throws the rays through the distal part of the cylinder into an ordinary ear speculum.
