Etymology: < ouaba- (in ouabaio n.) + -in suffix1, after French ouabaïne (A. L. Arnaud 1888, in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sci. 106 1011). Compare earlier ouabaio n.
Chemistry and Pharmacology.
A cardiac glycoside, C29H44O12, which is the active principle of the arrow poison ouabaio and is also found in the seeds of lianas of the related genus Strophanthus, and has effects similar to but of more rapid onset than those of digitalis. Also called G-strophanthin.
