Origin: A borrowing from Somali. Etymon: Somali waabayyo.
Etymology: < Somali waabayyo (also in form waabay) arrow poison. Compare French ouabaïo (1888 or earlier).There is no basis for the interpretation given in quot. 1856 at sense 1.
1. An arrow poison made from any of several East African trees of the genus Acokanthera (family Apocynaceae), esp. A. ouabaio and A. schimperi.

1856 R. F. Burton First Footsteps in E. Afr. vi. 198 This is the celebrated Waba, which produces the Somali Wabayo, a poison applied to darts and arrows.
