Etymology: Partly < South African Dutch oud baas, and partly < Afrikaans oubaas < Dutch oud old adj. (compare also ou adj.) + baas baas n. Compare later old baas n.

The elderly male owner of a home, farm, or business; the employer of servants or labourers; (more generally) an elderly white man. Frequently as a title of respect or deference, used alone or prefixed to a proper name, and as a form of address.
