Etymology: < Canadian French orignac (1603) and its altered form orignal (1664; 1634 in plural orignaux : see note) < Basque oregnac , oreñac , plural of orein stag < ancient Greek ὀρυγ- , ὄρυξ oryx n.According to Dictionnaire historique du français québécois (1998) at cited word, the Canadian French form orignac would originally have been pronounced with a silent final consonant (compare the variant orignat , 1632), and the singular form orignal was probably inferred from the plural orignaux by analogy with other pairs in -ac , -al (such as arsenac , arsenal ) forming their plurals in -aux . With the form horiniack compare H n. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ori·nyăl) /ɒˈrɪnjəl/.
