Etymology: < ornamental adj. + -ist suffix. In quot. 1961 probably after Russian ukrašatel′ decorator, ornamenter ( < ukrašat′ to decorate, ornament, make beautiful + -tel′ , suffix forming agent nouns); compare ornamentalism n. Compare ornamenter n., ornamentor n., ornamentist n.
A person skilled in, or given to, ornamentation; an exponent of ornamentalism.
