Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ornativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ornativus ornamental, non-essential (in 5th-cent. grammarians) < classical Latin ōrnāt- , past participial stem of ōrnāre orn v. + -īvus -ive suffix; compare -ative suffix. Compare Middle French ornatif (1555). In sense 2 after German ornativ (1896 or earlier).
