单词 orne
释义

orneadj.1n.

Forms: Old English orene, Old English–early Middle English orne, early Middle English ornere (comparative), early Middle English ornre (comparative), early Middle English ornure (comparative), Middle English oorne.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare unorn adj.F. Holthausen (‘Etymologische Forschungen’ in Streitberg Festgabe (1924) 157) proposes a possible derivation < or- prefix + Old English hīene (only in gehīene mean, poor, frail; < a Germanic adjective derived from the base of hean v.), but this is very unconvincing. In the following example, which is sometimes cited as a late attestation of the noun use, in orne is probably a scribal error for morne mourn adj.c1350 (a1333) William of Shoreham Poems (1902) 80 O Swete leuedy, wat þey was wo Þo ihesus by-come in orne For drede þo þe blodes dropen Of swote of hym doun orne.
