Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Ossian , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Ossian, the English name of Oisín, a legendary Irish warrior and bard + -ic suffix. Compare French ossianique (1800).The name Ossian was popularized in the 1760s by the Scottish poet James Macpherson (1736–96), who published his own verse as alleged translations of ancient Gaelic tales, later collected as Poems of Ossian (1805). The name Oisín is first recorded in Early Irish texts.
Of, belonging to, or resembling Ossian or the poems ascribed to him; epic, bardic; heroically Celtic. Also: having the character of Macpherson's rendering of these poems; grandiose, magniloquent.
