Etymology: < German Osteoblast (C. Gegenbaur 1864, in Jenaische Zeitschr. f. Med. u. Naturwissensch. 1 348) < ancient Greek ὀστεο- osteo- comb. form + βλαστός bud, germ (see -blast comb. form). Compare French ostéoblaste (dated 1871 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).

Histology.

A cell of mesenchymal origin that produces the organic matrix of bone (osteoid), by which it becomes surrounded to become an osteocyte.
