Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: over- prefix, damp v.
Etymology: < over- prefix + damp v. In sense 2 after overdamped adj. or overdamping n.; compare also earlier underdamped adj.
1. transitive. To diminish excessively the ardour of; to depress too much (cf. damp v. 3). Obsolete. rare.
