Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ovi- comb. form1, cell n.1
Etymology: < ovi- comb. form1 + cell n.1 N.E.D. (1904) records also a Latin form ovicella. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ōu·visel) /ˈəʊvɪsɛl/.
1. Zoology. A rounded chamber, projecting from the wall of a zooecium, in which the early embryos of some bryozoans develop. Also called ooecium.
