Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ōvum.
Etymology: < ovum n. or its etymon classical Latin ōvum egg + -o- connective. With sense 1 compare earlier oo- comb. form, ovi- comb. form1. With sense 2 compare oval adj.2 and earlier ovali- comb. form.Formations are found from the early 19th cent., apparently earliest in ovoviviparous adj. Compare French ovo- (formations in which are found from at least the early 19th cent.), German ovo- (formations in which are found from at least the first half of the 19th cent.). Combined with second elements ultimately of Latin or Greek origin.
1. Forming chiefly nouns with the sense ‘of or relating to ova or eggs’, or (in the names of substances) ‘found in or obtained from eggs’. Cf. oo- comb. form, ovi- comb. form1.
2. Prefixed to adjectives to form adjectives describing shapes which are intermediate between, or a blend of, oval and another shape (cf. oval adj.2 and n.1 Compounds 2, ovali- comb. form).
