Etymology: < ovate v.1 + -or suffix, probably originally after post-classical Latin ovator person who rejoices (1594 or earlier in British sources). Compare earlier ovation n.1
1. Roman History. A person who receives an ovation. rare.The word has been proposed (by H. M. Hulme Explor. in Shakespeare's Lang. (1962) 115–8) as a possible reading for Ouerture in Shakespeare Coriolanus i. x. 46: ‘Let him be made an Ouerture for th'Warres’ (First Folio, 1623); this is adopted in the Arden Shakespeare edition (ed. P. Brockbank, 1976) 146. See also discussion by D. George in the article cited in quot. 1997.

Crassus, who wore laurel.
1997 Notes & Queries Dec. 511/1 Masurius Sabinus claimed that ovators [L. ovantes (Aulus Gellius)] entered on foot, followed not by their soldiers, but by the senate in a body.
2. colloquial. A person who takes part in an enthusiastic welcome or round of applause.
