Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pagan n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < pagan n. + -ize suffix, after French paganiser (1445 in sense ‘to act as a pagan’, rare, 1836 in sense ‘to make pagan’) or its etymon post-classical Latin paganizare to act as a pagan (4th or 5th cent.), to become pagan (late 14th cent., c1500 in British sources). Compare slightly earlier paganized adj.
