Etymology: < post-classical Latin paginatio sequence of numbers assigned to pages in a book (17th cent.) < paginat- , past participial stem of paginare paginate v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French pagination (1765 or earlier). Compare later paginate v.
A sequence of numbers or signatures assigned to pages in a book, periodical, etc. Also: the action of marking the pages of a book or other written text with such a sequence; an instance of this.
