单词 pagne
释义

pagnen.

Brit. /ˈpanjə/, U.S. /ˈpɑnjə/, West African English /panj/
Forms:

α. 1600s– pagne, 1700s pane.

β. 1700s–1800s paan, 1800s paun.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: French pagne; Dutch paan.
Etymology: In α. forms < French pagne (1643; 1637 as paigne ) < Spanish paño (early 17th cent. in this sense; 12th cent. in sense ‘cloth, piece of cloth’) < classical Latin pannus cloth, piece of cloth (see pannus n.). In β. forms < Dutch paan (1704 in the passage translated in quot. 1705) < Portuguese pano (1262 in sense ‘cloth, piece of cloth’) < classical Latin pannus (see above). N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized, and gives the pronunciation as (pany) /paɲ/.
In West Africa: a length of cloth, esp. one worn draped around the waist or forming a tunic (now chiefly by women). Also: the material from which this is made.
