Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ovo- comb. form, viviparous adj.
Etymology: < ovo- comb. form + viviparous adj. Compare post-classical Latin ovoviviparus (1800 as a specific name), French ovovivipare (1805). Compare earlier ovi-viviparous adj.
Zoology.
Reproducing by means of eggs which hatch in the body of the parent, the developing young being nourished by yolk rather than directly by the parent, and then born alive (as in some reptiles and fishes, and many invertebrates). Cf. oviparous adj., viviparous adj.
