Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ovulum n., -ation suffix.
Etymology: < ovulum n. + -ation suffix. Compare French ovulation (1844). Compare slightly later ovulate v. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (ōuviulēi·ʃən) /əʊvjuːˈleɪʃən/.
Physiology and Zoology.
Discharge of an ovum or ova from the ovary in a female mammal; an instance of this. Also: the laying of eggs by an oviparous animal (rare).
