Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian overmōd , Middle Dutch overmoet (Dutch overmoed ), Middle Low German ȫvermōt , Old High German ubarmuot (Middle High German übermuot , German Übermut , now usually in sense ‘high spirits’), Old Swedish ivirmodh (Swedish övermod ), and (with īn -stem) Old Dutch overmuodi (Middle Dutch overmoede ), Old Saxon oƀarmōdi , Old High German ubarmuotī (Middle High German übermüete ) < the Germanic base of over- prefix + the Germanic base of mood n.1
Obsolete.
Pride, arrogance; overconfidence.The precise meaning of the word as it appears in Battle of Maldon (see quot. OE2) has been the subject of considerable scholarly debate: see, for example, H. Gneuss in Stud. Philol. (1976) 73 117–37.
