Etymology: < Hindi pān betel leaf < Sanskrit parṇa feather, leaf, deciduous foliage.In form pam after early modern Dutch pam (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at main sense).
Chiefly South Asian.
A preparation of betel leaves chewed as a stimulant; spec. a mixture of chopped areca nut, slaked lime, and other ingredients wrapped in a betel leaf.
