Etymology: < palsy n.1 + wort n.1, after post-classical Latin herba paralysis (from 14th cent. in British sources) or Middle French herbe paralyse (1549; French paralyse ), erbe a paralisie (16th cent.); compare quot. 1597 at sense 1. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pǭ·lziˌwɒɹt) /ˈpɔːlzɪwɜːt/.
1. British regional. The cowslip, Primula veris. Now rare.
