Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palumbīnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin palumbīnus of or derived from wood pigeons (Pliny) < palumbēs (also palumbis , palumbus ) wood pigeon (see note) + -īnus -ine suffix1.The first element of classical Latin palumbēs wood pigeon may be < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek πέλεια wild pigeon; with the latter part of the word compare classical Latin columba dove (see columbe n.).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of or relating to a wood pigeon.
