A religious revivalist movement founded in 1921 by Frank Buchman (see Buchmanism n.), emphasizing the importance of leading a spiritual life under the guidance of God, and characterized esp. by the discussion of one's moral dilemmas and failings in small groups. Cf. groupism n.The movement was legally incorporated under the name ‘Oxford Group’ in 1939, although it had informally been known by this name since c1930. The founders of Alcoholics Anonymous were greatly influenced by the methods and ethos of the Oxford Group Movement. The movement was eventually subsumed into the Moral Rearmament organization (see Moral Rearmament n.).
