Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ox n., gang n.
Etymology: < ox n. + gang n.Compare Scots regional oxen-gang (also oxen-going ), in sense 1, attested from the 15th to the 18th cent. ( < oxen , the plural of ox n. + gang n.). Now chiefly historical.
1. A measure of land formerly in use in parts of northern England and Scotland, equivalent to an eighth of a carucate.So called because a carucate was the amount of land that could be ploughed by a team of eight oxen in a year.In quot. c1480 used to render classical Latin iūgerum juger n.
