Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch overscinen (Dutch overschijnen ), Middle Low German ȫverschīnen , Old High German ubarskīnan (Middle High German überschīnen , German überscheinen ) < the Germanic base of over- prefix + the Germanic base of shine v.
1. transitive. To shine over or upon, to illuminate. Now rare (chiefly poetic).In quot. c1425: (of a shadow) to fall across, cover.
