1870 Amer. Naturalist 4 439 Professor von Siebold has discovered that the so-called female of Xenos is in reality a larva, and that it produces its young by germ balls like those of the larva of Cecidomyia (Miastor)... This child-reproduction, in individuals without true ovaries, was aptly termed by Von Baer ‘Pædogenesis’.
1883 Science 25 May 467/2 Berlese has also observed a true paedogenesis, in that the nymphs of Tachynotus inermis in one developmental series change directly into the adult, but, in the second, produce an egg, although they have no sexual orifice.
1911 Science 24 Feb. 302/1 Reproduction by insect larvæ, a form of parthenogenesis known as pedogenesis, is extremely interesting.
1941 Jrnl. Animal Ecol. 10 370 These midges have gregarious larvae which live under bark and reproduce by paedogenesis.
1987 Evolution 42 717 Certain Coleoptera and Diptera have omitted the imago stage, substituting paedogenesis.
2. Sexual reproduction by an animal which retains the juvenile or larval characteristics of its species, or of an ancestral form. Cf. paedomorphosis n.Cf. note at neoteny n.

1892 Amer. Naturalist 26 864 The [nemathelminth] species E[chinorhynchus]clavæceps is especially interesting: in this case the skin of the adult remains a syncytium with large nuclear bodies: [the] author looks upon this as a case of paedogenesis.
1897 Q. Jrnl. Microsc. Sci. 39 249 (note) Neoteinia, or the persistence of larval characteristics, does not necessarily imply that anticipation in time of sexual maturity which is usually connoted with the use of the term pædogenesis.
1940 Proc. Royal Soc. 1939–40 B. 128 497 From the accounts..of apparently occasional ripe salmon parr.., there can remain no doubt that paedogenesis in the male occurs throughout the geographical range of this species.
1974 Amer. Midland Naturalist 92 188 Among plethodontid salamanders..a secondary trend, toward abandonment of the post-metamorphic phase through paedogenesis, is associated with adaption to cave habitats.
1995 Q. Rev. Biol. 70 341/2 Most specialists would now call precocious development of sexuality in a juvenile form paedogenesis.
