Etymology: < classical Latin paeōnicus of or belonging to a paeon < Hellenistic Greek παιωνικός ( < ancient Greek παιών paeon n. + -ικός -ic suffix); originally via Middle French paeonique (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1603 at sense A.).
