Etymology: < over- prefix + span v.1In sense 1 perhaps after classical Latin permētīrī to travel through, traverse ( < per- per- prefix + mētīrī to measure: see measure n.), although compare overspinner v. elsewhere in the text cited in quot. a1522 at sense 1 and overspin v. in later versions of the passage cited in this quot. (see discussion at that entry).
