Etymology: < French papeterie stationery case (1842), stationery shop (1611 in Cotgrave; 1423 in Middle French in sense ‘paper manufacture’) < papetier paper merchant (1427–8), paper-maker (1507; < papier paper n. + -ier -ier suffix, with inserted -t- on the model of nouns in -ier derived from those in -et ) + -erie -ery suffix. Compare post-classical Latin papeterius paper-maker (late 12th cent.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pàpetri·) /papetri/.
