Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Papia.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < Papia, the name in post-classical Latin of Pavia , the town in northern Italy where the relics of St Augustine were kept (see Pavian adj.).The institution took its name from the church of St Augustine which was given to the fraternity as part of its endowment. In 1170–87 the church was known as St Augustine super murum (‘on the wall’), and is first called sci augustini pappey in 1244. It is also referred to as St Augustine pauie iuxta murum (‘beside the wall’). Compare:1877 Trans. London & Middlesex Archaeol. Soc. 5 186 The name of the Hospital was derived from that of the Church..appropriated to it, ordinarily known as St. Augustine's de Papey; rather than from the name, however applicable, of the Order of its beneficiaries, who were commonly styled papæ or fathers.
