Etymology: < classical Latin Paphius of or associated with Paphos, of or associated with Venus ( < Paphos (ancient Greek Πάϕος), the name of a city in Cyprus believed to be the birthplace of Aphrodite or Venus and formerly sacred to her + -ius, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare ancient Greek Πάϕιος of or associated with Paphos, frequently used of Aphrodite. With use as noun compare classical Latin Paphiī (plural) inhabitants of Paphos.
