Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: oxy- comb. form1, -cephaly comb. form.
Etymology: < oxy- comb. form1 + -cephaly comb. form, after French oxycéphalie (1876 in the passage translated in quot. 1878 at oxycephalic adj.). Compare slightly earlier oxycephalic adj.
Medicine and Physical Anthropology.
The condition of having a head or skull that is abnormally high and pointed in shape; spec. a congenital malformation of the skull characterized by an abnormally high forehead, reduced sagittal diameter, and pointed bregmatic region, resulting from premature closure of both coronal, and sometimes the sagittal and lambdoidal, sutures.
