Etymology: < ancient Greek ὀξύνειν to sharpen, make acid ( < ὀξύς sharp: see oxy- comb. form¹) + -t- (after Greek verbal adjectives in -τος) + -ic suffix.

Histology.

Secreting acid; spec. designating the parietal cells of the gastric mucosa, which secrete hydrochloric acid; containing such cells.
