Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese oyama.
Etymology: < Japanese oyama (also as woyama ), probably originally short for Oyama ningyō puppet made by, or in the style of, the brothers Jirō and Saburō Oyama (1656; compare quot. 1925), but later also in senses ‘female impersonator’ (1687), ‘beautiful woman, prostitute’ (1693). With the sense development from ‘doll, puppet’ to ‘beautiful woman’ compare English doll n.1 3.The name of the brothers Oyama means ‘little mountains’ < o- (either honorific prefix, or < wo- small) + yama mountain (perhaps referring to eyebrows inked in the shape of mountains).
