Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: oyer and terminer n.; French oyer et terminer.
Etymology: Short for oyer and terminer n. or its etymon Anglo-Norman oyer et terminer.
Law. Now historical.
1. A criminal trial held under a commission of oyer and terminer (see oyer and terminer n.). Obsolete.
