Etymology: < pack n.1 + man n.1Apparently attested earlier in surnames, from the late 13th cent., as Robert Pakeman (1272), Walterus Pakeman (1297), John Pakmon (1317), and in the place name Pakemanston (in Kent a1272), although it is possible that these reflect a different meaning.
1. An itinerant trader who carries goods in a pack for sale; a pedlar. Now regional (chiefly Scottish and North American).
