Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish paco.
Etymology: < Spanish paco (1554 in sense ‘llama’ (compare sense 1), 1598 in sense 2; 1551 in South American Spanish as adjective in sense ‘reddish’) < Quechua paqo. Compare Quechua paco sheep, p'akko golden, reddish yellow. N.E.D. (1904) treats this as non-naturalized, and gives only the pronunciation (pā·ko) /ˈpɑːkəʊ/.
1. The alpaca, Lama (or Vicugna) pacos.Quot. 1780 and 1834 appear to refer to the related (wild) vicuña, Vicugna vicugna.

1839 A. Ure Dict. Arts 915 Paco, or Pacos, is the Peruvian name of an earthy-looking ore, which consists of brown oxide of iron.
