Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare post-classical Latin pampilio (1462 in a British source).In sense 1, a connection has been suggested with Pamplona, the capital of Navarre, former kingdom and subsequently a province of northern Spain: see the note. In sense 2, a connection has been suggested with both Pampelonne, a town near Albi in the department of Tarn in France, and Pamplona in Navarre. Compare also Old French panpelune precious cloth woven in Pamplona (c1180).

1. A kind of fur used chiefly in the 15th cent. for the lining and trimming of garments. Dict. Older Sc. Tongue at pampilioun suggests that the word may designate black budge imported from Pamplona in Navarre (see budge n.1).According to quot. 1619 (supported by quots. 1503, 1505) the name of a fur-bearing animal; the word appears in a list of the ‘names of those Beasts, bearing Furr, and now in vse, with the Bountifull Society of Skinners’; atral animals recorded in this list remain unidentified, e.g. hipponesse n., moashy n.
