Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pampre.
Etymology: < French pampre (1694 in Corneille in this sense; earlier in sense ‘branches and leaves of a vine’ (1534 in Rabelais)) < classical Latin pampinus pampin n.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (‖pāṅpr', pæ·mpəɹ) ‖/pɑ̃pr/ /ˈpæmpə(r)/.
Originally and chiefly Architecture. rare.
An ornament or decoration representing vine leaves and grape clusters.
