Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: barley n., sugar n.
Etymology: < barley n. + sugar n., originally after French sucre d'orge (1644; 1692 in the source translated in quot. 1702).
An amber-coloured hard sweet made of boiled sugar, often flavoured with an extract of barley, and traditionally shaped into twisted sticks or oblong drops. Also: a piece of this.
