Forms: 1700s buccalies (plural), 1700s–1800s puckallie, 1700s–1800s puckally, 1800s pacauly, 1800s puckalie, 1800s puckauly, 1900s– pakhali.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi pakhālī.
Etymology: < Hindi pakhālī water-carrier < pakhāl water-skin (see pakhal n.) + Urdu and its etymon Persian , suffix forming agent nouns. Compare later pakhal n. N.E.D.(1909) enters this under puckauly and gives the pronunciation as (pɒkǭ·li) /pʌˈkɔːli/.
South Asian.
In South Asia (esp. India): a person employed to dispense water from leather bags carried on the back of a bullock. Also: (more fully puckauly bag) = pakhal n.; (in quot. 1841) the bullock carrying the water bags. Cf. bhisti n.
