单词 pantagamy
释义

pantagamyn.

Brit. /panˈtaɡəmi/, U.S. /pænˈtæɡəmi/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: English panta- , panto- comb. form, -gamy comb. form.
Etymology: < panta-, variant of panto- comb. form + -gamy comb. form. N.E.D. (1904) terms this ‘an illiterate formation’ and points to a potential misreading of it as meaning ‘universal or total celibacy’, as if formed from pant- (see panto- comb. form) and Hellenistic Greek ἀγαμία celibacy (see agamy n.).
U.S. Now historical.
A communal system of marriage in which all the men and women of a household or community are regarded as married to each other, formerly practised by the Perfectionist community at Oneida, New York State (1848–79).
