Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; perhaps modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: para- prefix1, Greek χρόνος , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < para- prefix1 + ancient Greek χρόνος time (see chronic adj.) + -ism suffix, perhaps after Byzantine Greek ἀναχρονισμός anachronism n. Compare French parachronisme (1691). Compare earlier metachronism n. and slightly later anachronism n.
An error in chronology, esp. the placing of an event later than its real date; error of this kind. Cf. anachronism n., metachronism n.
