Chiefly with the. The earliest epoch of the Cenozoic era and of the Tertiary period or sub-era, between about 65 million and 56 million years ago, which preceded the Eocene; the series of rocks dating from this time, now regarded as comprising the Danian and Thanetian stages, and bearing evidence of the emergence and development of mammals.Formerly often not recognized as a distinct epoch but incorporated in the Eocene. Now frequently grouped with the Eocene and Oligocene as the Palaeogene period.
