Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: palaeo- comb. form, Greek κρύσταλλος , κρυσταίνειν , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < palaeo- comb. form + ancient Greek κρυστ- (in κρύσταλλος ice (see crystal n.) or its etymon κρυσταίνειν to freeze) + -ic suffix.Coined by Captain G. Nares during the Arctic expedition of 1875–6 (compare quot. 1878, from a work by a member of the expedition).
Designating or consisting of old polar ice.Originally: ice believed to have remained frozen from remote ages; (now) ice more than about ten years old.
